It is an additive for use on cold, aggressive snow or icy warmer conditions. It works best at snow temperatures of 14°F (-10°C) and lower. Will also work on snow as warm as 22°F (-5°C) if very icy.
The two main dry lubricants are graphite and molybdenum disulfide, strengthened with tungsten disulfide and hexagonal boron nitride. The low-friction characteristics are attributed to a layered structure on the molecular level with weak bonding between layers. Such layers are able to slide relative to each other with minimal applied force, thus giving them their low friction properties.
